ESC Tuning, Part 3 — Every Parameter: Elceram Nitride G2

Note: all graphs and figures here are from my own testing — they show the behaviour and trends, and exact values vary by motor, ESC, track and conditions.

Throttle

  • PWM (0.5–45 kHz, default 8.0). ESC→motor update frequency. Lower = more current = more aggressive bottom; higher = finer/smoother + more top speed (motor more efficient), but very high adds ESC switching heat. Carl: 7–12 k, mostly 7–9 k.

  • Expo (−64…+64, 0). Throttle curve. + = more mid-throttle power (logarithmic);  = less mid. Carl: usually 0, ±5–10.

  • Response (−15…+10, 0). Throttle sensitivity (= throttle rate). + = sharper (needs a good radio);  = calmer. Carl: mainly bottom end, ±5.



Brake

  • Min (0–99%, 10%). Initial brake as you move neutral→brake. If drag brake is active, Min = drag. Carl: ~ or slightly above drag, ~5–15%.

  • Max (1–200%, 100%). Max brake at full brake. Carl: usually 100% in the ESC, set actual max on the radio.

  • Expo (−125…+125, 0). Brake curve. + = more mid-brake;  = less.

  • dragB (0–100%, 0%). Drag brake — brake with throttle at neutral.

  • PWM (1–45 kHz, 2.0). Brake PWM. Lower = more current = more aggressive brake.

  • parkB (off/on). Park brake — full brake when stationary.

Brake by corner length (from Part 1): long/sweeping → soft Min/Expo, modest Max, more dragB; medium → moderate Max + progressive Expo + some drag; small/tight → strong Max + firmer early bite, release to rotate.

Boost Timing (two bands — the G2 way)

Adds timing as rpm rises (more current, heat, less efficiency). Zero for stock.

The G2 shapes boost as two bands, so you get two ramps you can set independently: boost 1 across rpm 0 → rpm 1, boost 2 across rpm 1 → rpm 2. The timing curve is the interpolation between those points.

  • rpm 0 (1k–48k, 15k) — start of the boost-1 band.

  • rpm 1 (2k–49k, 25k) — end of boost 1 / start of boost 2.

  • rpm 2 (3k–50k, 50k) — end of the boost-2 band.

  • boost 1 (0–63, 0) — amount across rpm 0 → rpm 1.

  • boost 2 (0–63, 0) — amount across rpm 1 → rpm 2.

  • split (off / 30–90). When on, boost needs both the rpm and a throttle-% threshold met (AND condition) — stops boost firing too early in tight corners. Manual start ≈ 100 − boost timing; too high/low gives a 'knee'.

Carl (outdoor asphalt modified): mostly no boost; some big tracks ~10 boost from 20k to 40k.



Turbo Timing

Same as boost but activated at full throttle.

  • turbo (0–63, 25) — amount; more = top speed + battery strain. Zero for stock.

  • delay (0.00–1.00 s, 0.05) — time at full throttle before turbo activates (keeps it out of the corner before the straight).

  • ramp up (10–1000 /s or instant, 250) — rate it climbs to the turbo value. Higher = faster.

  • ramp down (10–1000 /s or instant, 350) — rate it decreases on lift.

Carl (outdoor asphalt modified): turbo 30–42, ramp up 200–420, ramp down 300–1000.



Hall Angle (G2 extra)

Software motor timing over an rpm range — like end-bell timing but in software, for efficiency. Zero for stock; Carl: not used.

  • rpm 0 (5k–49k, 10k) — start of the increase.

  • rpm 1 (6k–50k, 44k) — end of the increase.

  • hall angle (0–20, 0) — target angle, reached progressively rpm0→rpm1, held above.



Motor Power (G2 extra)

  • preset (+4T…0.5T / off). Makes a too-strong motor behave weaker without swapping motors.

  • Expert curve (power at 0…80k, each −99…0). Per-rpm power — lower = less; tune slow vs fast sections.



Protection

  • voltage warning (3.1–4.1 V, 3.6). ESC starts limiting power at this pack voltage.

  • voltage cutoff (3.0–4.0 V, 3.4). Power reduced to zero at this voltage.

  • motor limit (70–150 °C / off, 100). Limits power at this motor temp.

  • ESC limit (70–150 °C, 125). Limits power at this ESC temp.

(Two-stage warning→cutoff is a G2 thing; the Hobbywing exposes a single cutoff.)



BEC

  • voltage (6.00–7.40 V, 6.00, 0.05 steps). Servo/RX voltage — higher = more servo speed/power; drops if pack < ~7.8 V.

Drift / rpm limiter (G2 extra)

  • max rpm (off / 10k–60k). Rpm limiter — protect the drivetrain from over-rev (e.g. wheels in the air). Off for TC tarmac.

  • rpm drop (0–10k, 5k). How far rpm must fall before power re-engages.

  • power ramp up (softest…instant). How the motor re-engages; softer protects the drivetrain.

Brake Softening (G2 extra)

  • preset (off / S1–S5). Softens the brake at high speed — higher = more controllable for the conditions.

  • Expert curve (softening at 0…80k, each −99…0). Per-rpm brake softening. (This is brake-side softening — distinct from throttle softening.)



Config (Setting 2) — set-and-leave

  • Motor poles (2/4/6/8) — must match the motor or all rpm values are wrong.

  • Motor direction — normal / reversed.

  • RX deadzone — near min/neutral/max; reduce with a good radio.

  • Safe RX — prevents the motor starting at power-up if throttle is pressed.

  • UI mode (standard / expert) — expert unlocks the Motor Power + Brake Softening per-rpm curves.

  • Temperature units — °C / °F.

  • On-ESC maintenance — tracks wear by motor runtime (minutes) or distance (1 unit ≈ 100k rotations ≈ a 5-min race); separate from the app's maintenance.
